Brackenrig Cottage | Forest Threshold

Description

Set within a mature, tree-lined site, this contemporary cottage renovation and addition by Daymark carefully balances existing character with a refined, modern intervention. The design is anchored by a clear dialogue between old and new, where the original sloped-roof form is complemented by a series of stepped, flat-roofed volumes. Material continuity expressed through dark wood siding, black fenestration, and natural stone grounds the architecture within its landscape.

Across each elevation, massing is deliberately articulated to reduce scale and enhance integration with the terrain. Slatted screens, lower roof canopies, and layered forms introduce rhythm, privacy, and filtered light, while framing views to the surrounding forest and lake. The primary entry is choreographed as a sequence of compression and release, moving through a screened portal into a light-filled interior anchored by a two-storey glazed corner.

Significant earthworks and native replanting strategies restore the disturbed site, establishing a naturalized buffer that reconnects the cottage to its environment. Ash granite terraces, garden beds, and pathways extend the architecture outward, reinforcing a seamless indoor-outdoor relationship. The result is a thoughtful, site-responsive design that elevates the experience of lakeside living through clarity, restraint, and enduring material expression.

“An architecture of restraint, where stepped forms, filtered light, and forest edge thresholds quietly dissolve the boundary between cottage and landscape.”
